Anything Goes Delivers ‘Fresh Energy and Sparkle’ in Portland

Anything Goes has docked at the Keller Auditorium and is sending Portland audiences and critics alike tap dancing out of the theater. The tour of the Tony-winning revival, which runs through October 6, garnered a rave review from Grant Butler of the Oregonian, who calls it “a marvel of wit and timing.”

Cole Porter’s score still delights, as Butler writes, “You just need to listen to a tune like ‘You’re the Top’ to get the full sense of Porter’s genius for crafting memorable melodies and funny, complicated lyrics.”

Butler says Tony winner Kathleen Marshall’s choreography and direction give Anything Goes “fresh energy and sparkle” and praises leading lady Rachel York. “York takes tunes like ‘I Get a Kick Out of You,’ ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow’ and the title number and gives them her own distinct phrasing and crescendos, giving new nuance to them.” The Broadway vet’s dancing also received high praise. “York shows off her chops as a hoofer, particularly during the finales of each act, which feature almost the entire cast keeping pace with her brisk tap dancing.”

The 1934 musical comedy tells the story of the passengers aboard the S.S. American, a luxury cruise ship. On the voyage, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love—proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail.

Anything Goes stars York as Reno Sweeney, Fred Applegate as Moonface Martin, Josh Franklin as Billy Crocker, Alex Finke as Hope Harcourt, Sandra Shipley as Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt and Joey Sorge as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.
