Portland’s 2012-2013 Season Will Include The Book of Mormon, War Horse and More

Two young Mormons and a trusty horse are set to arrive in Portland. No, it isn’t the beginning of a joke; it’s Portland’s 2012-2013 Broadway season! The 2011 Tony Award-winning shows The Book of Mormon and War Horse will be part of the Fred Meyer Broadway Across America Portland’s upcoming season. The lineup will also include the Tony-winning musical Memphis as well as Flashdance, Rock of Ages and The Addams Family.

The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards, will open on January 1, 2013 and close on January 6. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two young Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, who soon discover their training did not quite prepare them for the world outside of Salt Lake City.

War Horse, winner of five Tony Awards, will run from February 26, 2013 through March 3. Using extraordinary puppets, War Horse tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of World War I. Albert, unable to forget Joey and still not old enough to enlist, embarks on a mission to find him and bring him home.

Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the rollicking story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. The musical opens on September 11, 2012 and closes on September 16.

Flashdance will shimmy onto the Portland stage from April 23, 2013 through April 28. Based on the hit 1983 movie, Flashdance tells the story of Alex, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh striving to make her dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality. The show features the hit songs from the movie, “Flashdance—What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “I Love Rock 'n' Roll” and 10 original songs.

Rock of Ages, the musical packed with the biggest rock hits of the '80s, will play from May 28, 2013 through June 2. Set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small-town girl falls in love with a big-city rocker in one of L.A.’s most famous rock clubs. Their story is told through some of the most awesome hits of the '80s, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “We Built This City” and “Wanted Dead Or Alive.”

The Addams Family will snap their way into Portland from June 25, 2013 through June 30. Based on the bizarre and beloved characters created by Charles Addams, this macabre musical finds the Addams clan put to the test when outsiders come to dinner, hurling Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch headlong into a night that will change the family forever.
